BEdroefde werelt wat baert gy verdriet,
Gelijk men hedendaegs voor oogen siet,
Want als men boven quam aldaer seer ras,
Den Duytser was gesneden sijn Kele af,
Daer lag hy doen gewentelt in sijn Bloet,

Maer dese twee spraken gelijkerhant,
Waerom hy wort gepijnigt soo terstont,
En soo men kreeg bekent'nis uyt sijn mont.
Hy ging bekennen doen geheel het feyt,
Gelijk sijn maet alvorens had geseyt,
Want hy is een verleyder soo men siet,
Gelijk hier aen dees Sondaer is geschiet.

Sad World how you cause sadness,
Like people nowadays see before their eyes,
How that one man hates the others,
And so falls into a sad state,
A Frenchman, German, and Italian,
They have in the country committed wayward [things],
Which cause them to be in custody,
And then there in a desolate state.
As it has now become apparent here,
To these comrades, hear my story,
And how it went with the one,
In whom a cursed anger has existed.
Upon a Friday morning here then see,
Such is a cruel and horrible murder,
Such as men in many years did not hear.
The early morning at the break of dawn,
People heard calling from the prison on the street,
That there happened a murder forthwith,
And they found the case to be true.
Because as people came there very quick,
They saw that there had been a great murder,
The German’s throat had been cut,
And another four powerful stabs in his body.
There he lay, rolled in his blood,
Oh horror, oh horror, who commits such a murder,
The case must be known here,
By the two who were present there.

But these two spoke at the same time,
That he had killed himself,
And that they had been sleeping,
And it happened without them knowing it.
But God who does not leave such things hidden
Made it known through his companion,
Who readily will reveal the case,
How that his mate was the murderer.
So he witnessed the evil,
But he soon denied this murderous fact,
Upon which he was instantly tortured,
And so they got a confession from his mouth.
He confessed the whole event,
Like his mate previously had said,
And that he was the murderer hereof,
And that his mate was not guilty of it.
The sad death was facing him,
That he must die in a short period of time,
And that he must pray to God with humility,
And fall with heart and soul at his feet.
He was referred to be beheaded,
And that his head, oh friends believe this,
Would be put upon an iron pike,
To indicate his [committed] murder and great violence.
They saw him coming there upon the scaffold,
But he had a small move towards his God,
Each was sad that he was facing it rapidly,
That such a man no longer makes a move.
Oh people leave evil and turn to God,
So you will never become the devil’s mockery:
Because he is a seducer as you see,
Like here happened to this sinner.
