Dans ce bel assemblage
Nous estions bien
L’argent du voisinage
Venoit soudain
L’assurance d’un grand profit
Fut sans contredit
Un riche dessein
Que flata l’entreprise
D’un grand butin.

Le retour de la chance
Est autrement
Car pour recompense
Le châtiment
Détruit tout ce bien là la la
En criant hola
Hola [illegible]
Quelle metamorphose
Que tout ela

Ah tres-facheux commerce
Je vous le dis
Pour celuy qui l’exerce
Dans ces jours cy:
Prenez bien vos précautions,
Vous qui sans façons
Croyez que cela
Est pure bagatelle
Hola hola

Au fâcheux équipage
L’on nous reduit
Nostre dos est le gage
Et le circuit
D’une juste reparation
Que nostre action
Noire procura:
Quelle horrible avanture
Que tout cela.

Nos testes sont couvertes
D’un ornement
Que nous rend peu alertes
Dans ce moment,
De pailles sont nos chapeaux
Nous rendans Nigaux
Et de grands Guerdins
Estant bien a son aise
Avant ce train

Fâcheuse circonstance
Sans dire mot,
Faut danser une danse
En écriteau
Dans les Carefours de Paris
Où rien ne s’oubli;
Entendant ces voix
Voilà l’homme & sa femme

Otto, gerabraakt.
Ach wat heb ik bedreven,
Aanhoort my naar geklag,
ik moet op’t kruis myn leven,
Eindigen dezen dag,
Door al myn kwaad en boos bedryven,
Moet ik een spiegel zyn,
ô Heer laat het hier blyven,
Ontfangt de ziel van myn.

Barent Voornagel, gerabraakt.
Ik die de straf des Heeren,
heb in ‘t Rasphuis beproeft,
Ging my tot erger keeren,
Met menig snood geboeft,
‘t Kwaad door my in de Meer bedreven,
En omtrent Amstelveen;
Doet myn laten op ‘t kruis ‘t Leven,
Spiegelt u groot en kleen.

Jan Oost-Inje, gerabraaakt.
Aanschouwers altemalen,
Ziet een Oost-Indies Vaar,
Die op ‘t kruis zal betalen,
Voor uwen oogen klaar;
Zyn kwaad in Diemermeer bedreven,
En weg van Amstelveen,
Heer wil myn zonden vergeven,
Ontsangt myn ziel met een.

Christiaan de Speelman, Gerabraakt.
Heer ik kom hier getreden,
Met een bedroefde toon,
Kroon met barmhartigheden,
Myn ziel in uwen troon,
Laat het kneusen van myn leden,
Myn gantsche straffe zyn:
Toekykers spiegelt u heden,
Houd u handen ryn.

Klein of Mooi Pietje, Gerabraakt.
O! Kruis daar ik myn leven,
Voor alle oogen klaar,
Aan God zal overgeven,
Ontfangt myn ziel hier naar,
Laat als de moordenaar gepresen,
Myn ziel in uwen troon,
By u Heer doch welkom wezen,
Zoo acht ik dat geen loon.

Jacobus Buys, Gehangen.
Wat baat nu al de weelden,
wat baat myn geld en goed,
dat ik door ‘t steelen deelden,
Daar ik nu sterven moet,
ô Jonkheid gy ziet nu het enden,
Van my gesponne draad,
ô God doet myn ziel dog wenden,
Tot uw genaden staat.

Jan de Boer, Gehangen.
Ik heb heel jong begonnen,
Myn leertyd was niet uit,
Doch is myn draad volsponnen:
Waarom ik als een Guit,
Moet hangen om myn kwalyk leven,
Spiegelt u algemein,
Wilt na de raad uws Ouders leven.
En houd u handen ryn.

Aanschouwers neemt exempel?
Aanziet myn doodbed straf,
Ach ik betre de drempel,
Van myn benauwde graf:
Ik plag te spitten en te graven,
Of ik wou in de Aart,
Maar ik ben, ô Slaaf der flaven,
Dit door myn doen niet waart.

Alle Gelyk.
Spiegelt u al te zamen?
Die om ons Zonden snood,
Voor u en God ons schamen,
Door een schandigen dood;
Bid voor ons dewyl wy nog leven?
Dat God in eeuwigheid?
Onze misdaat wil vergeven?
En onze ziel bevryd.

Otto, broken on the wheel
Oh what have I done,
Hear my pleas,
I must on the cross end my life this day,

Due to my evil and bad actions,
I must be a mirror,
O lord let this be the end of it,
Receive this soul of mine.

Barent Voornagel, broken on the wheel
I, who have endured the punishment of the Lord in the correctional facility,
Turned myself to worse,
With many evil deeds,
Evil, by me, was practiced more and more,
And around Amstelveen;
Leave my life on the cross,
Reflect upon yourself, big and small.

Jan Oost-Inje, broken on the wheel
Onlookers all together,
See an East-Indian father,
Who on the cross will pay,
Before your ready eyes;
His evil done in Diemermeer,
And away from Amsterlveen,
Lord will you forgive my sins,
Receive my soul at once.

Christiaan de Speelman, broken on the wheel
Lord I come treading here,
With a saddened tone,
Crown with compassion,
My soul in your throne,
Let it bruise my limbs,
My deserved punishment it is:
Spectators reflect on your present,
Keep your hands clean.

Klein of Mooi Pietje, broken on the wheel
O! Cross where I my life,
In front of your ready eyes,
Will surrender to God,
Receive my soul hereto,
Let as the murderer be praised,
My soul in your throne,
With you Lord be welcome,
So I do not consider that a reward.

Jacobus Buys, Imprisoned
How good does al that wealth,
How do money and things benefit me,
That I by stealing manifested,
Where now I have to die,
O youthfulness you now see the end,
Of my spun thread,
O God do turn my soul,
To your compassionate state.

Jan de Boer, hung.
I started very young,
My apprenticeship was not done,
And yet my thread is fully spun:
This is why I, like a rogue,
Must hang for my sorrowful life,
Reflect upon yourself in general,
Live by the advice of your parents.
And keep your hands clean.

Spectators take example?
See my stiff deathbed,
Oh I enter over the threshold,
Of my narrow grave:
I raggedly delve and dig,
As much as I wanted in the earth,
But I am, o Slave of slaves,
Not worth it because of my actions.

All together
Reflect yourselves all together?
Who because of our evil sins,
Are embarrassed to you and God,
By a disgraceful death;
Pray for us whilst we still live?
That God in eternity?
Our crime will forgive?
And free our soul.

Notes

Translation notes:
1. In modern Dutch feeling ‘geradbraakt’ means feeling physically exhausted because of great exertion. However, in the early-modern period, ‘radbraken’ was a form of punishment where a person would be tied down and an executioner would break their limbs with a rod or bar (both the lower arms and legs and the thighs and upper-arms).
2. ‘Oost-Inje’ refers to East-India.
