An account of the resource
The University of Melbourne's Parkville campus was established in 1853. Originally it was an area of swampland which had been a food gathering area for local Wurundjeri people. After being fenced to exclude outsiders, the campus became a picturesque landscaped park into which more and more individual buildings were added. The Quadrangle, the Lake and the System Garden were the earliest developments on the University of Melbourne Parkville campus.

Description
An account of the resource
The Quadrangle was initially built to provide housing for four professors, teaching spaces and a board room in the East and West Wings, with the foundation stone being laid in 1854. Construction of the North Wing began in 1856, and provided lecture theatres, a museum and later, space for a library. A South Wing was finally completed in 1969, fully enclosing the Quadrangle. It is the oldest non-ecclesiastical Gothic revival structure in Victoria. The Old Quad has undergone several restoration projects over its history, the most recent being in 2019.

An account of the resource
Before the Parkville site, the site proposed for the University was on Spring Street, where the Treasury Building now stands. This proposal was rejected and another proposal was made and granted for the current site in the same year, 1853.
In the initial proposal, a total of 100 acres of undeveloped land was requested in the north of the city, but only 25 acres were granted.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1880s, the University received multiple capital grants to expand and construct more departmental buildings. These included the New Medical School, the Biology School, the Natural Philosophy School, the free standing houses for professors, and the enlargement of the Old Chemistry building. Wilson Hall was built in 1882, funded by a donation by the pastoralist, Samuel Wilson, for whom the Hall was named. At the end of the century, the Engineering School and the Bacteriology building were created with specific capital grants.

Description
An account of the resource
Opened in 1888 as the Biology School under the direction of Baldwin Spencer, the first professor of biology at the University of Melbourne. The building contained a lecture theatre, teaching museum, and laboratories. In 1899 further rooms were added. In 1920 the building was renamed the Zoology Building. In 2011 the building was extensively remodelled to become a learning space for the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.

1920 - 1945: Beginning of the Public Works
Description
An account of the resource
The period from 1920 to 1945 witnessed three major shifts in the development of the campus. Firstly, the Public Works Department (PWD) became the equivalent of the University Architect, responsible for all major government-funded projects.
Secondly, there were attempts made to 'rectangularise' the arrangements of the buildings, roads and paths. The original site of the new Chemistry building was moved northwards to align with Geology, which meant that the new site was partially situated over the exisiting lake, and a part of the lake filled. As a result, the lake, which had been the location of much student activity and a focal point of the campus, had, by the 1930s, lost most of its picturesque appeal.
The third major shift was the move towards Modernism. The New Chemistry building represented an increased commitment to Modernism in architecture, and the first evident design of the modernist style was the proposal by Philip Hudson for the Union House extension, which was influenced by the style and character of the old National Museum that it extended — especially the straw-coloured bricks used by Joseph Reed in 1863.

An account of the resource
The University of Melbourne's Parkville campus was established in 1853. Originally it was an area of swampland which had been a food gathering area for local Wurundjeri people. After being fenced to exclude outsiders, the campus became a picturesque landscaped park into which more and more individual buildings were added. The Quadrangle, the Lake and the System Garden were the earliest developments on the University of Melbourne Parkville campus.

An account of the resource
Built in 1864, the National Museum was the result of Professor Frederick McCoy's persistence and enthusiastic building of a scientific collection. <br /><br />The National Museum collection was moved to the Public Library after Professor McCoy's death in 1899 and the building was used first by the Conservatorium of Music, and then by the Student Union. Very little of the original building now remains.

Description
An account of the resource
Wilson Hall opened in 1882, and was named for Sir Samuel Wilson, pastoralist and politician, who had bequeathed money for its construction. It was designed by Joseph Reed in the Gothic perpendicular style and was described by George Tibbits as “the architectural jewel of the nineteenth century university,” and as the University’s “soul”.
On the 25th of January, 1952, Wilson Hall was destroyed in less than an hour by a fire, possibly caused by an electrical fault.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1880s, the University received multiple capital grants to expand and construct more departmental buildings. These included the New Medical School, the Biology School, the Natural Philosophy School, the free standing houses for professors, and the enlargement of the Old Chemistry building. Wilson Hall was built in 1882, funded by a donation by the pastoralist, Samuel Wilson, for whom the Hall was named. At the end of the century, the Engineering School and the Bacteriology building were created with specific capital grants.

Built in 1885, first known as New Medical Building then Old Pathology, it was the first expansion of the medical school at the University of Melbourne (the first medical school in Australia). <br /><br />The building was remodelled in 1908 and a second storey was added. It was renamed in honour of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch in 2001.

1945 - 1960: Post-War & Conceptual Master Plans
Description
An account of the resource
During the Second World War, there was no new building built on the Parkville campus. The Vice-Chancellor, John Medley, urged the University to think ahead and plan for the next fifty years. John Medley had grand visions for the extension of campus, restructuring university education and the division of campus. However, due to a lack of resources, funding and material, many of these bold ideas were not realised.
Various master plans were proposed in this period, but none were officially adopted with complete conviction. Brian Lewis's Master Plan of 1948 was one of those plans, it was accepted but was not followed in detail.
During this time the talk of introducing Modernist buildings into the campus had started but was not realised completely until the most unforeseen incident in the history of the campus, the destruction by fire of Reed & Barnes' Wilson Hall in 1952. The New Wilson Hall was both an exemplar of Modernism in the University and a representation of national academic independence.

An account of the resource
Opened in 1956, Wilson Hall, is the location for university ceremonies such as graduations and conferral of office. It was designed by Bates, Smart and McCutcheon architects in the ‘International style’ and is one of several significant post-war buildings on campus, and the first to be built after 1945. <br /><br />The new building replaced the <a href="https://omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/constructing-change/items/show/6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1882 original</a>, destroyed by fire on the 25th of January, 1952. It was built on the original foundation walls and incorporated elements of the original, such as stone rosettes.” It was officially opened in March, 1956. <br /><br />The impressive glass wall on the east side let in so much sunlight that full-length curtains had to be installed. Wilson Hall remains a monument to the role of the ‘great hall’ in the life of the University, hosting graduations, exams, concerts, enrollments, and events such as career expos and rare book fairs.

An account of the resource
This time period the campus expanded vertically with an increase in high rise buildings . It was a decade of great influence for the University Architect, Rae Featherstone. He renovated a number of existing buildings but the most visible landmarks of his tenure were the Redmond Barry Building, the Economics and Commerce building and the Raymond Priestley Building. These three buildings were tall slab blocks, oriented with their longer edge facing North.

An account of the resource
After a decade of experimental unofficial master plans, in 1971 the University Council approved a Master Plan prepared by Ancher Mortlock Murray & Woolley Pty Ltd. The <a href="https://omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/constructing-change/items/show/32" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Master Plan 1970</a> emphasised on the spaces between and around buildings. Bryce Mortlock, the principal author of the plan, introduced the concept of building envelopes and limited the maximum height of the building to 3-5 storeys. The potential of the plan was realised in the <a href="https://omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/constructing-change/items/show/11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">South Lawn and Underground Car Park.</a><br /><br />There was a tension between the Mortlock's vision and heritage and conservation interests. During this period the University expanded across Swanston Street. The Master Plan 1970 envisioned the whole block surrounded by Swanston St, Faraday St, Cardigan St and Elgin St as a single building with two courtyards and a tall slab section facing Faraday St. This faced community opposition especially with regard to the historic significance of the single-storey terrace houses on Faraday St.

"The first glimpse of the Master Plan 1970 was realised in the South Lawn and Underground Car Park" (Goad & Tibbits, 2003, pp.131) The car park was constructed in 1971 to cope with the demand for student and staff parking on campus. It has been a popular location for filming, the best known example being its use in the film, Mad Max.

Formerly known as Arts South, the modernist John Medley building was named after the Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1938-1951. It was designed by Roy Grounds and constructed between 1969 and 1971, with the aim of relieving the crowding in the Old Arts building.

Description
An account of the resource
This time period the campus expanded vertically with an increase in high rise buildings . It was a decade of great influence for the University Architect, Rae Featherstone. He renovated a number of existing buildings but the most visible landmarks of his tenure were the Redmond Barry Building, the Economics and Commerce building and the Raymond Priestley Building. These three buildings were tall slab blocks, oriented with their longer edge facing North.

An account of the resource
The Redmond Barry building opened in 1961. "Designed (by staff architect, Rae Featherstone) to provide low-cost expansion for both humanities and science departments, the former North building, renamed the Redmond Barry Building in honour of the founding Chancellor, It was one of the earliest realisations of <a href="https://omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/constructing-change/items/show/30" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brian Lewis's 1948 master plan</a> that aimed at placing tall buildings around the perimeter of the site so as to keep the traditional centre of the university open." (Goad & Tibbits, 2003, pp. 110)

1920 - 1945: Beginning of the Public Works
Description
An account of the resource
The period from 1920 to 1945 witnessed three major shifts in the development of the campus. Firstly, the Public Works Department (PWD) became the equivalent of the University Architect, responsible for all major government-funded projects.
Secondly, there were attempts made to 'rectangularise' the arrangements of the buildings, roads and paths. The original site of the new Chemistry building was moved northwards to align with Geology, which meant that the new site was partially situated over the exisiting lake, and a part of the lake filled. As a result, the lake, which had been the location of much student activity and a focal point of the campus, had, by the 1930s, lost most of its picturesque appeal.
The third major shift was the move towards Modernism. The New Chemistry building represented an increased commitment to Modernism in architecture, and the first evident design of the modernist style was the proposal by Philip Hudson for the Union House extension, which was influenced by the style and character of the old National Museum that it extended — especially the straw-coloured bricks used by Joseph Reed in 1863.

Description
An account of the resource
The site of Union House was originally the location of <a href="https://omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/constructing-change/items/show/5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the National Museum of Victoria</a>. It became the home of the University Of Melbourne Student Union in the early 20th century, with the first renovations taking place in 1938 to "improve and extend" the building, including the addition of a theatre. It was extensively remodelled in 1968 to become a modernist building, with very little trace of its <a href="https://omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/constructing-change/exhibits/show/architecturalstyles/gothic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gothic Revival origins</a>.

Description
An account of the resource
Built in the era of expansion, 1938-1940, "The Commerce building was designed to incorporate an architectural gift to the University, the 1856 facade of the Bank of new South Wales in Collins Street, demolished in 1932 ... " (Goad & Tibbits, 2003, pp. 81). The building was used by the Architecture, Building and Planning Faculty until it was demolished (except for the facade) in 2012.

Description
An account of the resource
The University of Melbourne's Parkville campus was established in 1853. Originally it was an area of swampland which had been a food gathering area for local Wurundjeri people. After being fenced to exclude outsiders, the campus became a picturesque landscaped park into which more and more individual buildings were added. The Quadrangle, the Lake and the System Garden were the earliest developments on the University of Melbourne Parkville campus.

An account of the resource
The University of Melbourne was established on swampland, fed by creeks. A creek, known as Townend Creek, flowed along what became Elizabeth Street, out into the Yarra, it was an extension of another stream that began inside the University, and flowed down what is now Bouverie Street. Prior to European settlement, the site of the lake was a swampy area, significant to the Indigenous inhabitants, that linked into the adjacent creek (under what is now the site of the MSD Building).
The creek was dammed in 1861 and the resulting lake became a central and much-loved feature of the campus; used for yabbying, mock battles and boat races, as well as being a site of protest and punishment. The lake was progressively filled in during the 1930s Initially, the areas not occupied by buildings became lawn, and then, in the late 1960s, in the wake of the 1968 revolutions overseas, as part of the “riot-proof campus”, the lawns were dug up and replaced by “a seemingly random asymmetrical selection of tiled and concrete rectangles.” This was variously known as both the Union Lawn and the Concrete Lawn, and still plays an important part in University life as a place where students meet and University events occur.

Description
An account of the resource
The University of Melbourne's Parkville campus was established in 1853. Originally it was an area of swampland which had been a food gathering area for local Wurundjeri people. After being fenced to exclude outsiders, the campus became a picturesque landscaped park into which more and more individual buildings were added. The Quadrangle, the Lake and the System Garden were the earliest developments on the University of Melbourne Parkville campus.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1880s, the University received multiple capital grants to expand and construct more departmental buildings. These included the New Medical School, the Biology School, the Natural Philosophy School, the free standing houses for professors, and the enlargement of the Old Chemistry building. Wilson Hall was built in 1882, funded by a donation by the pastoralist, Samuel Wilson, for whom the Hall was named. At the end of the century, the Engineering School and the Bacteriology building were created with specific capital grants.

Description
An account of the resource
The Great Depression of the 1890s, which hit Australia in 1892, impacted the University through a substantial reduction in annual government grants. The existing buildings received little to no maintenance and there were no funds for new buildings until the end of the decade.
Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, grants were received for several new buildings, and for the extension or alteration of existing ones. The buildings that were planned and built included a new administrative block, new buildings for Geology, Botany and Agriculture, with extensions to the exisiting Metallurgy and Chemistry Schools.

Several master plans were proposed by the Professor of Agriculture, Thomas Cherry and Professor of Anatomy, Richard Berr. Eventually, an architect, George de Lacy Evans, was hired to propose another master plan. None of these plans were ever implemented. It was later decided to consult the Government Architect.

1945 - 1960: Post-War & Conceptual Master Plans
Description
An account of the resource
During the Second World War, there was no new building built on the Parkville campus. The Vice-Chancellor, John Medley, urged the University to think ahead and plan for the next fifty years. John Medley had grand visions for the extension of campus, restructuring university education and the division of campus. However, due to a lack of resources, funding and material, many of these bold ideas were not realised.
Various master plans were proposed in this period, but none were officially adopted with complete conviction. Brian Lewis's Master Plan of 1948 was one of those plans, it was accepted but was not followed in detail.
During this time the talk of introducing Modernist buildings into the campus had started but was not realised completely until the most unforeseen incident in the history of the campus, the destruction by fire of Reed & Barnes' Wilson Hall in 1952. The New Wilson Hall was both an exemplar of Modernism in the University and a representation of national academic independence.
