                <text>The Great Depression of the 1890s, which hit Australia in 1892, impacted the University through a substantial reduction in annual government grants. The existing buildings received little to no maintenance and there were no funds for new buildings until the end of the decade. &#13;
&#13;
Prior to the outbreak of the First World War,  grants were received for several new buildings, and for the extension or alteration of existing ones. The buildings that were planned and built included a new administrative block, new buildings for Geology, Botany and Agriculture, with extensions to the exisiting Metallurgy and Chemistry Schools. </text>
