An Arts Education Imperative: New Directions for Sustainability
Newsletter No. 6
1 October 2021

Hello members,

Update on progress

We have received some beautiful video responses and we want to thank you for your wonderful video contributions to this project!

https://doi.org/10.26188/16713883

Our data scientist is taking ‘core-samples’, twenty image snapshots taken every 20 seconds from each video that will be stitched into an image quilt. If you’re curious about image quilts, we’ll be getting back to each of you who have submitted videos with your computationally stitched image. Until then, this is some playing around with quilt layouts.

About your PechaKucha style videos

If you need more time to execute your PechaKucha style videos (20 slides each for 20 secs), we have good news for you. The deadline has been extended to 10 October. Later video submissions still have the chance to be showcased in our online gallery along with the others.

Updates on the Arts Imperatives Mozilla Hub

Mozilla Hubs is a collaboration tool used to create virtual spaces to be inhabited and frequented using mixed reality. Its first-person nature (either by VR or keyboard + mouse) sets it apart from other browser-based collaboration tools. The Mozilla environment is powered through an interconnected environment which can integrate many different platforms into its interface. Hubs offer innovative solutions for replacing non-physical interactions and can be used to encourage interaction between patrons. As everything is viewed at the ‘human-scale’, this platform offers the potential to be used as both a gallery and collaboration or meeting site for the research project.

Please jump in and interact with the development of the two Arts Imperatives sites in Mozilla Hubs (you might run into Jess, Amanda, Neda or Kate in there):

  1. Project Outdoor Lobby https://hub.link/nFyc5iB
  2. Arts Imperatives Indoor Gallery https://hub.link/wWJEaXq

Online research platforms

Digital methods of creation, collection, curation, and collaboration are central to achieve sustainable arts education as an imperative of this project. As a result, varied platforms and digital spaces, including, Figshare, Omeka, Zotero, Teams, Mozilla Hubs, etc. are being introduced to simultaneously and in collaboration, shape and inform the project’s outcome. Our team has decided to share short demonstrations of how these will operate to serve the purpose of this project. This week’s presentation (see below) shortly discusses Figshare which can be used to manage different projects and data.

An Arts Education Imperative: New Directions for Sustainability
Newsletter No. 9
5 November 2021

Hello members,

Update on progress
We have great news! Using the links below, you can now watch our team’s video presentations for the "Conference 2021 - Creative CONVERGENCE Créative" - hosted by The Canadian Network for Arts & Learning. Each video runs for 15 minutes.

Working collaboratively across the globe to consider Arts Education imperatives: new directions for sustainability
A/Prof Neryl JeanneretA/Prof Mark Selkrig, Dr Emily Wilson and Dr Jenni Hillman
SelkrigM etal Working collaboratively ArtsEdImperatives 1

Overview: This presentation is the first of two where we discuss the establishment of an international research project that explores four identified imperatives that will shape and propel arts education during the foreseeable, uncertain times. The project is designed to build both collective and diverse understandings about these imperatives through a range of digital tools and platforms while also detailing lived experiences of the researchers in addressing arts education challenges. An overview of the project’s various digital strategies, tools and platforms will be revealed to show how we aim to set the groundwork to transform education practices in building a resilient, equitable and sustainable future.

Placemaking and digital data sites for a sustainable arts education(s)
Dr Kathryn Coleman, Amanda Belton, Neda Sajadi and Jessica Laraine Williams
Placemaking and digital data sites for a sustainable arts education(s)

Overview: This 20/20 presentation will explore opportunities for arts based educational research and arts education praxis research using digital methods and feminist metho-pedagogies. We position how placemaking as a ‘New Materialist Theory of Pedagogy’ can be harnessed to make and know place, differently for the endemic. Our video presentation uses the same method of patching data traces as placestories that we invited our collaborators to embody and brings together artist-teachers, artist-researchers, data creatives to speculate what might be.

Hello members,

Update on progress

Exciting news! Our team has successfully prepared two presentations for the 2021 conference, "Creative CONVERGENCE Créative", hosted by The Canadian Network for Arts & Learning coming up on 28-29 October. Also, we are continuously developing the Mozilla Hubs space which hosts the project artefacts. Here are two more quilt layouts made by our wonderful data scientist. These quilts include twenty image snapshots taken every 20 seconds from each video that we received from you. This week, Jenni and Emily have kindly agreed for their quilt images to be added to our newsletter.

The wonderful image quilt from Jenni’s video, Sustainability in Tertiary Music Education, takes us through her research. The coloured waveform shows the audio signature of the speaker.
https://doi.org/10.26188/16682641.v2

This beautiful quilt is created from Emily’s video, Engaging Arts Education. Placing the images side-by-side with the visual representation of the audio in the bottom right patch gives us a brief overview of the visual and audio data of her work.

Hello members,

Update on progress

We are pleased to report that the project team have been successful with two applications to present at the "Conference 2021 - Creative CONVERGENCE Créative" - hosted by The Canadian Network for Arts & Learning. In addition, we are continuously developing creative artworks to help visualise this project. Here are two more quilt layouts made by our wonderful data scientist. These quilts include twenty image snapshots taken every 20 seconds from each video that we received from you.

This is the image quilt of ‘core samples’ from Neda’s video, I come from Iran, on her practice-based research. Placing the images side-by-side with the visual representation of the audio in the bottom right patch gives us a brief overview of the visual and audio data of her beautiful work.
https://doi.org/10.26188/16682677.v2

The image quilt from Kate and Marnee’s video on their Child + Adult Artists Research Project (C+AARP) takes us through their illustration of the folding, unfolding, and refolding of work as a paper plane. The yellow waveform shows the different audio signatures of the two speakers.

About your PechaKucha style videos

If you need more time to execute your PechaKucha videos, we have good news for you. The deadline has been extended to 10 October. Later video submissions still have the chance to be showcased in our online gallery along with the others.

Update on the Arts Imperatives Mozilla Hub

You have been invited to attend an extraordinary meeting of our MGSE project team on 11 October, 12-1 pm (AEDT), to walk through the meta world sites and artworks created by our creative team (check your email in the past week for the Zoom meeting details). Participation is optional due to different time zones. We will be recording a video of this meeting and will provide a link to it in the upcoming newsletters.

Creative work publications list (thus far!)

This working list for citing within the ‘Arts Education Imperatives’ project includes the DOI for each item. Digital Object Identifiers, commonly shortened to DOIs, were designed to give individual digital resources or items a unique, persistent identifier. DOIs provide a regulated means of identifying 'objects' so they can be accessed even with changes of ownership and location. This is achieved through a combination of technical infrastructure and social infrastructure. In essence, while the DOI never changes, the location that it is pointing to, and the information presented at that location can be updated as needed. For more information you can watch our short video demonstration of Figshare: https://doi.org/10.26188/16713883.v1

Hello members,

About your PechaKucha videos

In the past week, we have received your short videos (6min40sec) and we want to thank each of you for your wonderful contributions to this project. Each video has been uploaded to Figshare with a unique digital object identifier (DOI) for later citation. If you have shared your video with us but did not receive a confirmation email, please contact us. Also, if you require further assistance or if you need more time to execute your video, please do not hesitate to inform the team.

Online research platforms

Digital methods of creation, collection, curation, and collaboration are central to achieve sustainable arts education as an imperative of this project. As a result, varied platforms, and digital spaces, including, Figshare, Omeka, Zotero, Teams, Mozilla Hubs, etc., are being introduced to simultaneously and in collaboration, shape and inform the project’s outcome. In coming weeks, our team will share short demonstrations of how these will operate to serve the purpose of this project. This week’s short presentation included a demonstration to Figshare which can be used to manage different projects and data. We will send the link for this presentation in our next newsletter.

Update on progress

The Omeka virtual gallery space is currently being developed to house and connect the existing and emerging data. In addition, the visual gallery space is expanding to include each video contribution and the artworks. Our team is busy at work, so we will be back to you with our next newsletter on 1 October with exciting news about the progress.

More information about your creative contributions
When developing the videos, please consider the narratives and the story you wish to tell through your research in response to the four imperatives:

  • Decolonisation
  • Cultural resilience
  • Inclusion, agency, and wellbeing
  • The Post-digital age

You can focus on individual or in addition, collaborative, integrated research as long as -it responds to the four imperatives and addresses the existing connections and linkages. The output will live on beyond this research project and will be easily accessible into the future.
Please share with us your thoughts, suggestions, and feedback.

Update on progress
The Omeka virtual gallery space is currently being built to house our creative outputs and research data for this project. Exciting developments include visuals of the gallery spaces, a world map where we can situate the research origins of all participants and interactive exhibits.
